What an HLS playlist contains
HTTP Live Streaming (HLS, RFC 8216) delivers video as short media segments listed in text playlists. A master playlist lists variants — the same content at different bitrates and resolutions. Each media playlist lists the segments for one variant, with tags such as #EXT-X-TARGETDURATION, #EXTINF segment durations and #EXT-X-KEY for encryption.
What you can check
- Variant ladder: BANDWIDTH, AVERAGE-BANDWIDTH, RESOLUTION and CODECS for each rendition
- Segment list with durations, total duration and target duration
- Encryption method (AES-128, SAMPLE-AES) and key URI
- Live vs VOD: live playlists are polled and new segments appear as they are published
Frequently asked questions
- Why does VideoZ use a proxy for HLS?
- Browsers block reading playlists from other domains unless the server sends CORS headers. VideoZ fetches the .m3u8 text through its own server-side proxy so any public playlist can be inspected. Only playlist text is fetched; media segments are not downloaded.
- Can it analyze DASH (.mpd)?
- Not yet. VideoZ currently supports HLS playlists only.
- How many variants and segments are shown?
- Up to 10 variants from a master playlist and the most recent 500 segments of each media playlist.
